Bubion and the Area
Almanzar de Bubion is a townhouse situated at the edge of the white village of Bubion, one of three in the Poqueira Valley in La Las Alpujarras, Andalucia, Southern Spain. The other two white villages are Pampaneira and Capileira. The Poqueira Valley, also known as the Poqueira Gorge (Barranco de Poqueira, in Spanish) is the pride of the National Park of the Sierra Nevada Mountains whose summits crown it. It has been officially designated a region of special artistic and historical importance (Conjunto artistico historico, in Spanish). This area, known as La Alpujarra de Granada also includes La Contraviesa that runs down to the Mediterranean Sea. There, wine is elaborated and produced. In fact, the highest vineyard in Europe, Bodega Barranco Oscuro, is to be found at an altitude of about 1300m in la Sierra de la Cnontraviesa near the villages of Cadiar, Albondon, Murtas and Lobras.
Las Alpujarras is a popular tourist destination for anyone visiting Andalusia and Southern Spain who wishes to venture inland, leaving the overcrowded coast behind and experience the traditional and authentic rural Spain.
Bubión has much to attract visitors: it is steeped in art, craft and history. Next to its 16c. parish church are remains of an Arabic fortified tower from the days of Al Andalus and the church tower itself is built over the minaret of the then Moorish mosque; it also has a traditional townhouse, converted to an ethnic museum just off the town hall square (Plaza del ayuntamiento, in Spanish) and a public swimming pool complex is under construction.
Though tranquil and off the tourist bus route, the village of Bubion boasts some of the best restaurants and bars of the region and provides excellent shopping for local handicrafts and local produce. It has a cyber café and supermarkets.
There are weekly street markets in most villages of La Alpujarra and Bubion is no exception. Its street market takes place on Mondays. The largest street market, however, is held each Thursday in Orgiva, at a 25mns' drive. Another popular one is the Friday market at Pitres, La Taha, about 10mns’ drive. There is an irregular art and craft market in Orgiva held in plaza Alpujarra known as Mercado de las Artes.
Many sporting and other activities are at hand: bird watching, walking, paragliding, cross-country quads rides, horseback riding, rambling, trekking, climbing, mountain biking etc.
Classes of art, photography, flamenco and sevillana as well as Salsa and Tango dancing, guitar, yoga and languages are available within a short radius.
Granada City with its famous Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens is about an hour’s drive away and so is the Costa Tropical. Prodallano Village and the ski slopes of Sierra Nevada are at some 2 hours, Almeria and Malaga airports are at 2 hours drive respectively and Granada airport at 1hr30mns.
